Due to lack of awareness this profession is not well known in our country. People don’t really know the importance of pharmacists in our society. In an environment of increasing public expectations, workforce pressure and innovative advances, it is essential to define the contribution of pharmacists as they play a major role not only in the healthcare system but have a more vast impact. It would be not wrong to say that the job of a drug specialist and other professionals in the field of pharmacy have been downgraded and displaced off the boundary limits. A wide utilization of the word ‘professionalism’ is misunderstood on the part of a pharmacist’s role.

ROLE OF PHARMACISTS

  •   COUNSEL ON PRESCRIPTION:

The main role of the pharmacists is to help people know about their required medication so that they can take their medicine with proper measures. They are available to answer their questions and satisfy them mentally about their health condition. Pharmacists tell them the precautions they have to take according to their disease.

  • MANAGE CHRONIC DISEASES:

Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol…. pharmacists know about treating these conditions and can be a valuable resource between the physician and the patient visits. They can also figure out what to do when a problem arises.

  • WELLNESS SCREENINGS:

Many pharmacists offer screening for blood pressure, cholesterol, and diabetes, and can help you figure out what to do if there is a problem.

  • INTERPRET DRUG INTERACTIONS:

Pharmacists look at all possible interactions not only between prescriptions, but also over the counter, herbals, and supplements. So be sure your pharmacist knows everything you are taking; as the pharmacists are your medicine experts.

  • REHABILITATIVE CARE:

Pharmacists prevent the diseases for which pre-symptoms are being showed in the patients. They make sure to prevent damage and pain from disease, and even prevent disease from causing other complications. They are the healthcare partners of the patients.

  • PROVIDE VACCINES

Pharmacists provide vaccines that prevent serious diseases such as flu, shingles and pneumonia. So the patients don’t have to go to hospitals on regular bases as the assistance is provided by pharmacists.

  • VERIFY, PREPARE AND CHECK MEDICATION:

Pharmacists ensure the medication is right for you based on your medical condition and lifestyle. Then they check the drug choice, dose, and give you proper instructions to make sure you receive the right drug.

  • RATIONAL USE OF MEDICINE:

Pharmacists have the best knowledge of medicines as they know how to formulate and regulate them. So it is one of the main roles of the pharmacists to educate the people about the rational use of medicines.

  • ROLE IN DISASTER MANAGEMENT:

Pharmacists provide the following aids to contribute to disaster management:

  • Pharmacy and temporary Pharmacy related services.
  • First aid treatment to deal with cuts, burns and fractures.

The main point is that patients and other healthcare professionals need to agree on the depth and breadth of a pharmacist’s training and trust the skills they can expect from them. In this way, a combined effort of all the healthcare professionals including the pharmacists will definitely give a more effective patient counseling and will improve the overall healthcare services.
