World Mental Health Day

“Mental health is just as important as physical health”

“Put your mental health first and above all.”

The road of your life is never smooth. You are subjected to various challenges making your life full of bumpy rides. There are times when you are inflicted with anxiety and stress, which if not handled properly can turn out into serious mental disorders.

Every year WHO marks and recalls October 10 as a day for global mental health education, awareness and advocacy against social stigma. With adverse mental health comes:

1.  Anxiety disorders:

-Panic disorder

-Phobias

2.  Mood disorders

-Persistent depression

-Bipolar disorder

3.  Schizophrenia disorder

Mental health disorders may be treated by psychotherapy (talking therapy), self-helping and medications. Pharmacists play a major role in assisting mentally ill people by dispensing proper drugs which will aid their treatment (including anti-depressants, anti-psychotics and mood stabilizers).

It is said that 1 out of every 6 people suffer from depression globally. Most of them encounter minor depression attacks. Community pharmacies confront many patients who require sold over-the-counter anti-depressants. However patients with severe conditions are also approached by clinical pharmacists.

Apart from medication, a pharmacist must build public consciousness regarding mental health and its unfavorable effects if not taken care of. Because prevention begins with better understanding!

The contribution of pharmacists towards mental health still demands progress. Pharmacists in all care settings should be comfortable in dealing with both physical and mental health.

     “Specialist mental health pharmacists can, and should, be using their skills and expertise to individualize treatments for best outcomes for service users.” – says Peter Pratt, NHS (National Health Service – England.)

So remember:

  • When you take care of your body, care for your mind too. Peace of mind is the key to a harmonious soul.
  • Be aware of the conditions of the people around you. You never know when a person starts drowning into the darker side of life.
  • Offer help to others and be nice to all! This might be a minor contribution but can save a life from suicide.
  • Develop mental health awareness and consult certified health practitioner.

 

To be healthy as a whole, mental wellness plays a role!

No doubt, the greatest wealth is health. So stay happy and stay healthy.
